My Rapunzel Days

Lizzie (6) saw the new Disney movie Tangled, and she called me to ask if my hair was as long as Rapunzel's hair. No, but it was pretty long. I did not cut my hair until I was 11 years old and it was so long I could sit on it. I wore my hair in braids to school but on Sundays I wore it in a ponytail or just down around my shoulders to church. I always did like the fairytale of Rapunzel and am very happy I found my prince. These pictures show my hair in braids (1st grade), with my long hair in a ponytail (5th grade). When I was 10 I decided that it was time to grow up and get my hair cut. On my 11th birthday, June 7, 1963, I went to my mother's beauty salon and her hairdresser cut off all my long hair. My mother saved my hair and had it made into a long hairpiece that I wore to formal dances in high school. When Lizzie, Charlotte, and Jade grow up and want to look fancy for the prom they can borrow my long hair and look like Rapunzel.

Welcome to Take the Whole Family

I'm writing a book on the history of family vacations, and I thought others might be interested in some of what I've found. I'm espeically interested in the family road trips of the baby boomers from the Fifties through the Seventies. Vacation guides often told people to "Take the Whole Family" so I chose that as the title for my blog.

I'd like to know more about the family vacations you took when you were a child. Maybe you have a memory of a family vacation or a favorite snapshot you would like to post.
